Chapters 1-3 Response

I have read the first few chapters of the book Cion by Zakes Mda. I have to say that I’m impressed with the writers ability to create characters who are not only interesting in way but also cool to see how they act and their life situations. I believe it takes a great writer to be able to insert themselves into their own book. Mda created himself in the book as the sciolist which I found very interesting.

I think it is really cool how this book takes place right here at Ohio University. It’s really cool to read about the characters on Court Street and other places around campus. It’s fascinating to hear them talk about the famed holiday here known as Halloween.

I like Toloki as a character because he can joke around in ways that certain people understand. I don’t particularly like Obed though because he is pretty much a nobody. I wish that he had some sort desire in life, some sort of drive that led him to an ultimate goal, but he just lives with his parents and he’s fine with that.

Cion so far is just okay for me, as in it’s not so interesting that I want to keep reading it from start to finish; however, the book is not so boring that I don’t want to ever pick it up again. I can tell that this book is going to pick up and probably end up being a pretty good book.

  1. I agree with you on the fact that it's quite interesting how this book takes place in our town. Toloki's personality is definitely one of a kind. I can't really accept the way he handles death, but maybe that's what mourners do? Though the book has not caught my full interest yet, I look forward to the climax of the story, and then the ending.

  2. I also liked how Mda incorporated the sciolist into the novel. When I read through the book myself, I knew there was a twist to the sciolist, but could not pin point it until we went over it in class. Also, I agree about needing to have some motivation in life. It is understandable that things happen; people lose jobs for one reason or another and have to move back in with their parents. However, not trying to progress in life is another story.

  3. Obed character is one that I don't find very intresting. I feel as if these charcters don't have any importance and have no desire to benift anyone but themselves. I'm reading about a family that is dry and boring. I know the story picks up when Zakes Mda goes into Obed ancestors and talks about the famous underground railroad, but for the most part this book just don't spark my intrest.
